PC and Console Gaming Reviews
Best RPG's for iPhone
The iPhone and iPod Touch have available to them a wide variety of games that can be downloaded from the iTunes Store for a small fee. My personal favorite type of game is the RPG, or role playing game, and there are a bunch of them available on iTunes. With so many to sort through, you may be left wondering which ones are the best. Here’s a look at some of the best iPhone RPG’s on iTunes. Each of these games were chosen for their unique style of gameplay.
Wii Game Review: Deer Drive
This is a crazy shooting game for the Nintendo Wii where you shoot at a variety of running animals in different forest settings. One might classify this as a hunting game since you do shoot at animals that are hunted throughout North America, but in reality this is just a shooting gallery type game. It’s still pretty fun for short periods of time and requires no learning curve - you just point and shoot.
Wii Accessory Review: Nyko Perfect Shot
This is a gaming accessory for the Nintendo Wii that resembles the Colt 1911 semi-automatic handgun. It is designed to make shooting games more realistic by giving you a gun to hold in your hand and a trigger to pull instead of just pushing a button. If you play a lot of shooting games, I think it is definitely worth buying because it is so much easier to hold than the regular Wii Remote.
PC Game Review: Dragon Age Origins
Dragon Age Origins is the kind of role playing computer game that I have been waiting on for years. I honestly thought this type of gameplay had died in favor of MMORPG’s, but I was wrong. This game is top notch in every aspect, and I hope it turns out to be a success so more games like it are made. I feel like the MMO market was gotten a little stale and it’s time for companies to start putting our more single player RPG’s.
iPhone/iPod Touch Game Review: Skee-Ball
I had my eye on Skee-Ball in the iTunes App Store for nearly a week before I decided to fork over my 99 cents to buy it. I thought the idea of a skee-ball game for the iPod Touch or iPhone seemed way too simple. What intrigued me was that this game is one of the most popular games on all of iTunes, and it's unusually high ratings made me think there must be some fun to be had from playing it.
PS3 Game Review: Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10
My review of the excellent new Tiger Woods golf game from EA Sports. Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10 may be the best one yet and here is your in-depth look one of the greatest golf games out this year from EA Sports.
Disclaimer: I receieved a free copy of this game from Electronic Arts in exchange for a review.
Wii vs. Xbox 360 vs PS3 - Which Game Console is Best?
A look into the three main gaming consoles currently on the market and which one I think is best, and why. This comparison looks into the features of each console and the pros and cons of buying one over the other. I think the PS3 is best in terms of overall values, especially now that you can watch Netflix movies online with the PlayStation 3, and at no extra charge.
PS2 Game Review: Gladius
According to the Wikipedia, Official Xbox Magazine said that Gladius is one of the best games most people have never played, and I have to agree. Unfortunately, it never gained much of an audience despite being a pretty solid game. I think most people were turned off by the slow pace of it, but I found it to be a challenging strategy game with some RPG elements that kept me coming back.
PS3 Game Review: Need for Speed Shift
Need for Speed Shift is a great racing game, but it’s like most every other great racing game in that there’s nothing new here. It’s a lot like one of the Gran Turismo games, but with much more forgiving controls and truly excellent graphics. If racing games are your thing, then this is the one to get. Be sure to check out my hints and tips, too. I also have the full Need for Speed Trophy List.
PS3 Game Review: Zombie Apocalypse
This is a new game for the PS3 that is available from the PlayStation Store for just $9.99. In many ways, it is like an arcade version of Left 4 Dead. This type of game is fun to play for a few minutes at a time, but it doesn’t really have much long term appeal. I still enjoy playing it quite a bit.
PS3 Game Review: Resistance 2
Resistance 2 is one of those games that puts me on the fence. By itself, I would say that it is a pretty solid first person shooter for the PS3. However, it is a sequel, and I can’t help but feel like the original game was more fun. I still like this game, but there’s something about it that keeps me from liking it as much as I did the first Resistance.
Wii Game Review: Wii Sports Resort
Wii Sports Resort is an updated and expanded collection of sports games for the Nintendo Wii that serves as both a sequel to Wii Sports and a showcase for the new Wii MotionPlus, which comes with the game. As a whole, it is a pretty fun game although some of the included games are very simple. It's still worth getting if the MotionPlus thing takes off, because it has a lot of potential.
PS3 Game Review: Batman - Arkham Asylum
Believe the hype! This game really is as good as everyone makes it out to be, and there is buzz around that it's already a 'Game of the Year' contender. Check out what makes it so good here in this in-depth review. Batman: Arkham Asylum just might be the best superhero game ever made. If you need help with the game, I've also written a Boss Battle Guide.
PC Game Review: Raven Squad
Raven Squad is a new game that is supposed to a combination tactical RTS/FPS that lets you switch between overhead and first person views, but it just isn’t nearly as cool as you’d think it would be. I didn’t think it was a bad game, but it could have been so much better.
Wii Accessory Review: MotionPlus
I didn't know it when I bought it, but the Wii MotionPlus only works on games designed to be used with the Wii MotionPlus. I was expecting it to enhance all of my games, but this was not the case at all. More Wii games are going to be released that support this controller add-on, but for right now there's very little reason to spend $20 on one separately unless you want to have two players in Wii Sports Resort or the handful of other games that currently support it.
PS3 Game Review: Quake Wars - Enemy Territory
The Quake series should be a bit insulted with this PS3 treatment of the game. It's mediocre in every possible way, and should be avoided. I am glad I didn't buy this one new, or I would have been very upset. How could a console port of such a great PC game be such a mess?
PS3 Game Review: Killzone 2
I was not very impressed with Killzone 2. It's not a bad game, but it isn't anything special, either. Other than having really good graphics, the gameplay is probably best suited for newbie gamers just getting into first person shooters. Hardcore FPSers will find this one fairly uninspired. I don't understand why it is getting such high ratings. Check out my multiplayer strategy guide, too.
Wii Game Review: Punch-Out!!
Remember the classic NES game of Mike Tyson's Punch-Out where you fought through a variety of fighters before going against the champ himself? You'll get to face those same fighters, plus a new guy, in this one. Tyson is not in it, though. Just like before, you will have to figure out how to exploit your opponent's weakness in order to beat them in the ring. It's going to take the right balance of timing, patience, and speed in order to win - just like in real boxing.
Call of Duty 5: World at War Game Guide
This complete guide to CoD5 includes a review of the game, information on getting past known technical issues with the game, and much more. There's also a complete list of all the challenges in the game, as well as how to complete them, and a full map guide with overhead images of each map.
PC Game Review: America's Army 3
This is a completely free game that you can download and play on your PC. It was developed by the U.S. Army for recruitment purposes, as well as for virtual training. The online multiplayer component of this game is great, and it's hard to beat something so good that is totally free.
Top and Bottom 5 - Video Games and Movies
Ever notice how most video games based on movies are not very good? Most movies based on video games aren't so great, either. Here's a list of what I consider five of the best and worst of each category.
- Top 5 games based on movies
- Top 5 movies based on games
- Bottom 5 games based on movies
- Bottom 5 movies based on games
Wii Game Review: Star Wars Force Unleashed
Although I own both a Nintendo Wii and a Sony PS3, I decided to get the Wii version of the game because the gameplay seemed better suited to the Wii's motion controls. A big part of this game involves picking up objects with the Force, and that seemed perfect for the Wii. I also liked the fact that I found this game brand new at Toys-r-Us for just $19.99. Also check out my review of the Force Unleashed book.
PC Game Review: Ghostbusters: The Video Game
If you are a fan of the Ghostbusters movies, then you must check out this new Ghostbusters: The Video Game for Windows PC. It features the voices of all the main actors from the movies, and Dan Aykroyd said that this game is essentially the third Ghostbusters movie. I have heard that there is really going to be a third Ghostbusters movie made soon, and I suspect that this game was made to help renew interest in the series, since the last movie came out well over a decade ago.
PS3 Game Review: The Punisher - No Mercy
The Punisher: No Mercy was released for the PlayStation 3 in July of 2009. It is available exclusively for download from the PlayStation Store for just $9.99. Comic books fans will probably get a kick out of playing The Punisher character in this first person shooter game. Otherwise, it’s sort of hit and miss. Be sure to check out my strategy guide for help in improving your online score.
PS3 Game Review: Zen Pinball
I am a pinball fanatic, so much that if I go into an arcade, it’s usually the pinball machines I play instead of video games. I am also a fan of video pinball games, but sometimes they get to be too much and stray too far away from traditional pinball. Such is the case with Zen Pinball for the PS3. I bought it the day it came out in the PlayStation Store, and despite having played this game for a couple of weeks, I just don’t like it.
Wii Game Review: Gold's Gym Cardio Workout
A review of the rhythm boxing exercise game for the Nintendo Wii. Although it uses the Wii Balance Board, this game is no replacement for Wii Fit. The main problem I had with this game was that it doesn't do a very good job of accurately measuring your level of activity, nor does it properly detect the type of punch you throw.
PC Game Review: Elven Legacy
Elven Legacy is a turn-based fantasy combat game that takes old school game mechanics and puts them into this very tough title. It plays sort of like a board game and requires a lot of patience just to get through some of the maps, but does at least offer a high replay value. This one is recommended more for hardcore strategy gamers.
PS3 Game Review: Burnout Paradise
Burnout: Paradise is a lot different from the previous Burnout titles, but this racing game has tons to offer. From the graphics to the online play, this is certainly one of the best racing titles available for the PlayStation 3. Even better, you can now find it for cheap since it has been out a while, and there are a ton of downloadable add-ons for the game.
